UAE takes pleasure in the compactly well designed Chevrolet Sonic 2012

In recent times, compact small segment cars have been a platform of great interest for car makers as they are primary source of revenue in many regions’ around the world. In today’s day and age, entry level cars not only need to perform well but should also offer decent space and features (like USB and AUX inputs have now become a necessity for every buyer). Here in Dubai, this segment is dominated by the likes of Japanese giants like Toyota, Nissan and Honda. With a view to set a firm foot in this segment, Chevrolet recently launched a freshly design youth car, Sonic 2012 in UAE.

Chevrolet Sonic 2012 is a sporty compact sedan with a motorcycle inspired design which brings in the aggressive feel to the car. This car is fun to drive and the innovatively styled interiors care charming and pleasant. Chevrolet offers lots of fun accessories to add a personal touch to your Sonic like sporty pedals, spoiler, chrome fuel cap etc. Along with the sedan, a hatchback version of Sonic is also available in Dubai. Sonic is available in three variants starting from the base model to a mid-level LS and top of the range LT model on both sedan and hatchback versions.

The exterior design of Sonic is fresh and innovative, the dual round headlamps (without a plastic covering ) look aggressive and are inspired from motorcycles. Chevrolet’s signature grille design and sporty casting around the fog lights add an athletic feel to the car. Hidden rear door handles (hatchback) give an illusion of a coupe and sharp neat lines all around the body add to the beauty. The sedan looks elegant from the back with beautiful curves and the hatchback looks rather sporty with sharp lines and a sleek spoiler. Sonic sits on five spoke 17”alloy wheels. From the outside, Chevrolet Sonic looks sporty and stands out from the crowed with unique style elements, such attention to detail in styling is usually not  seen in an entry level car, Sonic successfully sets new standards here.

Under the hood lies a 1.6L DOHC 4-cylinder engine with VVT technology. This engine is mated with a choice of 5-speed manual or 6 speed automatic transmission and produces an impressive 115HP. Sonic responds swiftly on roads which is impressive, however on the downside, it tends to oversteer. The vehicle maintains a firm grip on the ground but is shaky in strong winds because of its light body weight. Apart from this, it is a fun car to drive and pumps a good amount of power for the segment it serves.

On the interiors, Chevrolet has done a beautiful job with Sonic. Aggressive designs, uniquely styled elements like the propeller shaped air vents make the interiors sporty and classy. The dash board bears an amazing design with the central console forming a ‘V-shape’ down to the gear stick. The most eye catchy element in the interior is the electronic tachometer, it is beautifully crafted in plastic and is again inspired from motorcycles. Lit in cool blue lights, the tachometer is clear to read and good to look at. Sonic is integrated with Bluetooth for hands-free calling, six speaker CD player with iPod connectivity and a USB port supports other audio devices, on the other hand the entertainment system fails to impress when it comes to music quality. Self leveled headlamps align the focus of lights as per the vertical high of the road and rear parking assist help with parking in confined spaces. Such intelligent use of modern technology in Sonic is impressive, unlike other small segment cars, this vehicle has loads to offer.

On the down side, leg and head room on the rear seats is minimal which might be a concern for tall people. Sound insulation is poor and due to which cabin comfort is disturbed by the various noises from outside. For safety, the base variant of Sonic gets only driver side airbag, the LS gets driver and front passenger airbags and the LT gets an addition of side impact air bags.

Chevrolet Sonic is a sporty rugged looking vehicle and the unique inspiration from motorcycles in body styling brings in innovative design. Interiors provide a pleasant feel and are stylishly finished. The availability of various fun accessories and comfort of modern technology makes Sonic a impressive entry level car for Dubai.
